Android OS is based on Linux Kernel 2.6

I just saw a video of an Android developer saying that the Android System is based on a Linux 2.6 kernel. So the only thing the mobile manufactures should take care of is that their hardware runs smoothly on a Linux 2.6 system. Here is more info about the android architecture and on which the system it’s based on.

Android SDK released

Today, the Android SDK was released by Google. I am happy to write the first post on Android Portal. The SDK contains an emulator and some Java library stuff. For Eclipse users an Android plugin is available, too. You can watch a first video of an Android-powered phone here:

As you can see there is also a nice google maps app on the android demo. This is not just an Ajax / Browser version of google maps. Its a real android application showing you how to zoom to content and so on.

I just installed the Android SDK on Ubuntu Linux along with the Eclipse plugin. The emulator runs fine and all the example apps are working. I will now try to code the an Android-based app for working with the Open-Xchange Groupware API to display new appointments and such. Below is a screenshot of my Eclipse installation running the Android emulator:

If you want to develop a first Android app, too, here is an Android Eclipse tutorial video by Dan Morill.

A first how-to/tutorial about how you can code with Android SDK can be found here.
